Matheus Nicolau

Improves to 6-1 with UFC
March 26, 2022
Nicolau defeated David Dvorak via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.
In a battle of two surging flyweights, it was Nicolau who got his hand raised. It didn't come easy. Nicolau and Dvorak fought to virtually even terms the entire fight. Both men failed on both their takedown attempts, while Dvorak landed 14 more strikes (60-46) than his opponent. Nicolau was responsible for the biggest moment of the fight with a knockdown in Round 2. It was nice to see the Brazilian show off the power in his hands, as each of his victories to this point have come via decision. It's extremely difficult to find fault in Nicolau's 6-1 record in his first seven UFC bouts, but sooner or later he will have to learn how to stop his opposition in order to hang with better competition.

January 12, 2022
Nicolau (17-2-1) is scheduled to face David Dvorak (20-3-0) in a flyweight bout set for March 26 at the UFC's event in Columbus, Alexander K. Lee of reports.
The matchup features two red-hot fighters, with Nicolau having won four straight bouts and with Dvorak off to a 3-0-0 start to his UFC career. Nicolau most recently competed Oct. 9 in Las Vegas, where he defeated Tim Elliott in a unanimous decision.
Improves to 5-1 with UFC
October 9, 2021
Nicolau defeated Tim Elliott via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
It was another middling performance from Nicolau, although as is typically the case, he emerged victorious. The Brazilian does deserve credit for picking up the pace and improving following a slow start. Nicolau fought Elliott to fairly even terms on the feet, although he opened up a massive 74-48 edge in total strikes landed in Round 3. The most impressive part of Nicolau's evening was his takedown defense. Elliott is an excellent wrestler who doesn't need much room to get his opposition to the mat, but Nicolau stuffed 9-of-10 attempts. Nicolau's 5-1 mark with the UFC is excellent, but all five of those victories have come via decision, with two of the "split" variety. Nicolau is going to have to start stopping his opposition if he hopes to continue this string of recent success.
Taking on Elliott
July 27, 2021
Nicolau will take on Tim Elliott in a flyweight bout at the UFC event Oct. 9, reports.
Nicolau has won nine of his last ten fights. He returned to the UFC in March when he defeated Manel Kape via split decision. Elliott is coming off a unanimous decision victory in March as well over Jordan Espinosa.
Gets benefit of doubt in Vegas
March 13, 2021
Nicolau defeated Manel Kape via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Nicolau was fortunate to emerge victorious after Kape righted the ship after a poor first round, but it's better to be lucky than good in this sport sometimes. The Brazilian's strong start was on the strength of a pair of successful takedowns. Kape was also plagued by a bout of inactivity in the early going. Nicolau is probably a bit better on the mat than the feet, but he does have four career knockout wins and is still just 28 years old. There is theoretical upside here given Nicolau's youth and all-around skill set, but Nicolau needs a dominant victory over a highly-ranked opponent in order to make a name for himself in a thin division.
Set to face Kape on March 13
March 3, 2021
Nicolau will face Manel Kape at the UFC Event on March 13, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
Nicolau's previously scheduled matchup against Tagir Ulanbekov was called off earlier Wednesday, so that left the flyweight without an opponent at the UFC Event on March 13. Enter Kape, who is currently battling a thumb injury but should be medically cleared and ready to go when the two face off. Kape most recently lost to Alexandre Pantoja via unanimous decision back in February while Nicolau will be making his UFC return after a near three-year hiatus.
