Sara McMann

Turns back clock in victory
March 26, 2022
McMann defeated Karol Rosa via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.
This was a classic McMann fight. It was slow, grinding and resulted in her landing a boatload of takedowns and racking up a ton of control time. It's the only type of bout McMann can win these days, but credit to her to fighting to her strengths. She entered as a +205 underdog, but that didn't stop Sara from hitting 4-of-6 takedowns, the end result of which was more than two full rounds (10:27) in a dominant position. No one would have batted an eye if either of the first two frames were scored 10-8 in McMann's favor. McMann is 41 years of age and is just 2-3 in her past five fights even with this win, but this bout was a reminder that she's still dangerous if she can get her wrestling game going.

To return in March
November 29, 2021
McMann will take on Karol Rosa in a bantamweight matchup at the UFC event scheduled for March 26, Ag. Fight reports (via Marcel Dorff of MMADNA).
McMann last fought in January when she was submitted by current title challenger Julianna Pena. She was slated for an August matchup against Ketlen Viera in August but was forced to withdraw due to injury. Now 41 years old, McMann will be put to the test again against an undefeated fighter who is more than a decade younger. McMann has typically been more effective with her grappling than her striking, but that may be challenging against a fighter like Rosa who brings a 91 percent takedown defense to the table, albeit over a small sample size.
Withdraws from Aug. 28 fight
August 17, 2021
McMann withdrew from her fight versus Ketlen Vieira on Tuesday, per reports.
McMann declined to specify what the injury is, but it's enough to force a late withdrawal from the Aug. 28 bout. It's unclear when she'll be healthy enough to fight again.
Set to fight in August
May 7, 2021
McMann is slated to take on Ketlen Vieira in a bantamweight matchup at UFC Fight Night on Aug. 28, reports.
McMann lost to Vieira via submission (arm triangle) in September of 2017, and McMann has dropped two of her three fights since then. McMann most recently fought in January and lost to Julianna Pena via submission (rear-naked choke) at UFC 257. Vieira has gone 1-2 in her last three fights, most recently losing to Yana Kunitskaya via unanimous decision at UFC Vegas 19 in February. Vieira has advantages in both height and reach.
Struggles continue in Abu Dhabi
January 23, 2021
McMann lost to Julianna Pena via submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:39 of Round 3 at UFC 257 on Saturday in Abu Dhabi.
Now 40 years of age, this was essentially a must-win for McMann in order to remain somewhat relevant at 135 pounds, and she couldn't get the job done. It did start well for the former Olympic silver medalist. She used her trademark wrestling to control the first frame, but Pena was far more effective in Round 2 before running McMann out of the building in Round 3. A latecomer to mixed martial arts, McMann made a name for herself beating up fringe roster fighters. She never performed well when the competition level across from her increased. Sporting a 1-3 record dating back to February 2017 with all three of those losses coming via submission, it's far from a lock that McMann gets another fight with the company.
Upcoming fight pushed back
December 26, 2020
McMann's scheduled bantamweight matchup against Julianna Pena was pushed back to UFC 257 on Jan. 23, reports.
There was some initial confusion about the date of the match, and it's now been moved again, having originally been set for Jan. 16. The card will take place in Abu Dhabi. As of early-January, McMann is listed as a slight betting favorite of (-125).
