Kelvin Gastelum

Injury Knee
Est. Return 6/4/2022
Headed for knee surgery
April 5, 2022
Gastelum will undergo knee surgery next week, John Morgan of The Underground reports.
Gastelum was originally supposed to face Nassourdine Imavov at UFC 273 on Saturday, but the opponent was switched to Dricus Du Plessis following Imavov's withdrawal. It was then Gastelum who bowed out, which led to some criticism from MMA fans. This news suggests a legitimate injury was in play, though Gastelum's manager wasn't able to offer a return timetable, as the team needs to wait and see how the procedure goes. The 30-year-old Gastelum is a former title contender who has fallen on hard times of late, losing five of his last six bouts. While each of those defeats has been against elite competition, it makes sense for Gastelum to want to get healthy before taking a fight with his roster spot potentially on the line.

Facing Imavov at UFC 273

Gastelum has lost five of his past six bouts, with his most recent effort being a loss via unanimous decision to Jared Cannonier in August. Imavov is trending in the other direction, having won three of four fights since joining the UFC and coming off a TKO win over Edmen Shahbazyan in November.
Struggles continue in Vegas
August 21, 2021
Gastelum lost to Jared Cannonier via unanimous decision (47-48, 47-48, 47-48) at UFC on ESPN 29 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Gastelum is seemingly involved in a tight one every single time out and this was no exception. That being said, the judges got this one correct. Kelvin has as much or more natural ability than most every middleweight he steps into the Octagon against, but he's had real difficulty overcoming being the considerably smaller man each and every fight. Gastelum wins win quick hands, volume in the striking game and toughness, but the first two become considerably less effective when your opponent is two inches taller and has a six-inch reach edge (like Cannonier did here). Kelvin -- who is 1-4 in his past five fights dating back to April 2019 -- is at a career crossroads. His talent isn't in question, but sooner or later you have to win your fights, and Gastelum hasn't done that lately.
