Misses weight, title vacated
Oliveira weighed in at 155.5 pounds and his UFC Lightweight Championship has been vacated ahead of his UFC 274 matchup with Justin Gaethje, Aaron Bronsteter of TSN.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
Oliveira had two attempts on the scale to get under the 155-pound lightweight limit, but unfortunately he was unsuccessful. The fight is still on, but Justin Gaethje will be the only one with the opportunity to earn the belt if he's able to defeat Oliveira on Saturday. If Oliveira wins, the title will remain vacant.

Will fight Gaethje in May
Oliveira will take on Justin Gaethje for the UFC Lightweight Championship at UFC 274 on May 7, Brett Okamoto of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Oliveira was able to successfully defend his lightweight title back in December against Dustin Poirier. That came after he took over the belt back in May against Michael Chandler. Gaethje was able to defeat Chandler as well in his last fight back in November.

Remains lightweight king
Oliveira successfully defended his UFC Lightweight Championship on Saturday, defeating Dustin Poirier via submission (rear-naked choke) at 1:02 of Round 2 at UFC 269 in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
It didn't come easy for Oliveira, as he had to survive countless clean power shots from Poirier early in Round 1, but this fight followed almost the exact same script as Charles' victory over Michael Chandler this past May that won him his belt. When the clock flipped to Round 2, Oliveira was seemingly a different man. He limited Dustin's space, did a bunch of damage on the feet from in tight and began to work his trademark ground game. Poirier openly admitted in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan that his goal was to drag this fight into the championship rounds, and Charles simply wouldn't allow him to do it. Once Dustin gave up his back early in Round 3, it was over. It's become quite clear that Oliveira can't match the power of some of the other top contenders at 155 pounds, but the rest of his game is elite, and there are no questions about that durability. That durability is going to be put to the test if, as expected, his next challenger is Justin Gaethje. For now, Charles can enjoy his first successful title defends and tenth straight victory overall (as well as a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus).

New UFC Lightweight Champion
Oliveira became the new undisputed UFC Lightweight Champion on Saturday, defeating Michael Chandler via TKO (punches) at 0:19 of Round 2 at UFC 262 in Houston.
ANALYSIS
Unbelievable. Oliveira's 28th UFC bout and 17th stoppage win are both new company records. Those two stats pale in comparison to him becoming the new lightweight champion. It almost didn't happen. Charles floored Chandler with a low kick just seconds after the opening bell rang, but it was all downhill from there for the Brazilian in Round 1. He survived a very deep guillotine from Chandler in addition to somehow surviving a massive flurry of strikes along the fence from the American. Chandler appeared to be in full control entering Round 2, but Oliveira connected with one counter strike that dropped Chandler, and the fight was over following a couple follow-up shots. Charles is an elite submission specialist, one of the best in the history of the sport, but it is the improvement in his striking the past couple years that won him this belt. Oliveira, now 31 years old, arrived on the scene in the UFC as a kid back in August 2010. Nearly 11 years later, he is the undisputed UFC Lightweight Champion. "Do Bronx" did it the hard way and deserves the reward. On top of the belt, he'll earn a $75,000 Performance of the Night bonus for his efforts.
