Expected to make full recovery
McGregor is expected to make a full recovery following a successful surgery on his left leg Sunday, Damon Martin of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
This is great news for McGregor after suffering fractures to his tibia and fibula during Saturday's fight against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. The 33-year-old tweeted Sunday night that he'll spend the next six weeks on crutches before he's able to work back into shape. Otherwise, the full timetable for his return remains unclear. In other news, coach John Kavanaugh revealed Sunday on an Instagram live chat with Laura Sanko that McGregor had a pre-existing left ankle injury leading up to the fight and may have caused weakness and contributed to Saturday's major injury. McGregor underwent scans during camp, but it was deemed only a minor issue.

Undergoes surgery on left leg
President Dana White confirmed after McGregor's first-round loss to Dustin Poirier at Saturday's UFC 264 in Las Vegas that McGregor is scheduled to undergo surgery Sunday on his lower left tibia, Marc Raimondi of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
McGregor sustained the injury late in the first round, when his left leg buckled as he attempted to plant his foot. Poirier took advantage of McGregor losing his balance and pummeled the Irishman with punches to close out the round before referee Herb Dean called the bout on a TKO (doctor's stoppage). A timeline for McGregor's return to competitive action won't be known until his surgery is completed, but the next step for the 33-year-old's career remains up in the air. With losses in three of his last four bouts, McGregor is out of the mix to contend for the lightweight or featherweight belt, though his standing as the promotion's biggest draw should keep him in the conversation for a high-profile matchup. White suggested after Saturday's event that McGregor -- once healthy -- would likely get a chance to face Poirier for a fourth time, if both fighters are open to a rematch.

Injury leads to TKO defeat
McGregor lost to Dustin Poirier via TKO (doctor's stoppage) at 5:00 of Round 1 at UFC 264 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
You can't make this stuff up. After an action-packed first round in which McGregor started quickly and then faded, one bad step in literally the final seconds of the round caused Conor to suffer the lower leg/ankle injury that resulted in the stoppage of the fight. Given the look of the injury, it's reasonable to believe that McGregor may have originally injured himself on one of the several leg kicks he landed early on. It must be noted that it wasn't going well for Conor prior to the injury. His biggest mistake came when Poirier pushed forward for a takedown along the fence about halfway through the round and McGregor decided to go for a guillotine choke that never had a chance of connecting. Once his arms tired out, Conor found himself on the bottom in a whole heap of trouble. He never truly recovered. Doctors eventually put a splint on McGregor's leg and he was helped from the octagon. Anything can happen in this sport, but Conor didn't appear as if he would be winning this fight even if the injury didn't occur. While Conor's star remains as bright as ever, his "act" only works if he's winning fights and his record says he's lost three of his past four. He's not in the title conversation in any division at the moment and an "attraction" fight such as a trilogy bout with Nate Diaz may be the best move for McGregor when he recovers from injury.

Main event locked in
McGregor and Dustin Poirier both hit the 156-pound lightweight limit Friday morning, locking in the main event fight at UFC 264 on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
There may not be a belt on the line Saturday night, but McGregor is looking to avenge a January defeat -- the first and only knockout of his MMA career. Arguably the biggest factor in that defeat was McGregor's inability to check leg kicks, as Poirier was able to take out his base, ultimately leading to the Round 2 finish. Still, a victory here would tip the trilogy 2-1 in favor of McGregor, in addition to a near-certain title shot in the lightweight division. Physically, both men stand at 5-foot-9, with McGregor owning a two-inch reach advantage. Striking is the forte of each combatant, with each landing more than five significant strikes per minute at similar accuracy rates. If this fight does get to the ground, however, Poirier would seemingly have the advantage in most grappling situations. In the sportsbooks, the fight started out as a pick'em at the beginning of the week, but McGregor finds himself as a slight betting underdog of (+105) as of Friday morning.

Trilogy bout with Poirier confirmed
UFC president Dana White confirmed Wednesday via his personal Twitter account that McGregor (22-5-0) will face Dustin Poirier (27-6-0, 1 NC) in a lightweight fight July 10 at UFC 264 in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
As anticipated, McGregor and Poirier will meet in Las Vegas this summer for their third matchup. McGregor previously secured a first-round knockout victory over Poirier in September 2014, but Poirier got the better of the Irishman in their rematch in January at UFC 257 with a second-round win. The McGregor-Poirier trilogy fight will serve as the headliner for the July 10 event.
