Barely gets past Rogerio Bontorin
Royval defeated Rogerio Bontorin via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) at UFC on ESPN 32 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
It was a back-and-forth affair in which we got a good idea of what the judges valued most in terms of scoring. Royval allowed Bontorin to score 8-of-9 takedown attempts, good for 7:41 worth of control time. It's virtually impossible to win a decision when your opponent is racking up those type of numbers, but Royval found a way. He attempted to wear Bontorin down with volume, firing of 171 total strikes compared to just 71 from his opponent. Royval also had a couple quality submission attempts and a reversal in Round 3. Royval has fought better than his 3-2 career mark with the UFC would lead you to believe. He's still just 29 years of age, so there should be some runway ahead of him as the Colorado native attempts to string together some wins in 2022.

Matching up with Bontorin
Royval will face Rogerio Bontorin (suspension) in a flyweight bout at UFC's Jan. 15 event, Mike Heck and Guilherme Cruz of MMAFighting.com report.
ANALYSIS
Royval will attempt to end a two-bout losing streak after being beaten by Alexandre Pantoja via submission last month. Bontorin has been suspended since mid-May for testing positive for a banned diuretic after his win over Matt Schnell, though the suspension was reduced after claims of a tainted supplement were proven true.

Taps out to Alexandre Pantoja
Royval lost to Alexandre Pantoja via submission (rear-naked choke) at 1:46 of Round 2 at UFC on ESPN 29 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Royval began his UFC run with submission wins over Tim Elliott and Kai Kara-France but has since gone on to suffer back-to-back stoppage defeats at the hands of Pantoja and Brandon Moreno. Of course, Moreno is the current UFC Flyweight Champion and Pantoja is likely his next challenger, so the defeats don't look all that bad in hindsight. Royval hung tough in Round 1, but Pantoja eventually took his back early in Round 2, and that is generally a recipe for disaster. Royval may not be on the same level as the top flyweights on the UFC roster, but he has a couple nice victories under his belt since joining the UFC and makes for solid roster depth.

Booked for August matchup
Royval (shoulder) will face Alexandre Pantoja (hand) in a flyweight matchup at UFC Fight Night on Aug. 21, Farah Hannoun of MMAJunkie.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Both Royval and Pantoja will be returning from 180-day medical suspensions when they enter the Octagon in August. Royval sustained a right shoulder injury when he lost to Brandon Moreno via TKO (injury) at UFC 255 in November. Pantoja hurt both of his hands when he defeated Manel Kape via unanimous decision in February. Royval has advantages in both height and reach.
