Mackenzie Dern

Gets benefit of judges decision
April 9, 2022
Dern defeated Tecia Torres via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC 273 on Saturday in Jacksonville.
Dern is unquestionably improving each time we see her inside the Octagon. Whether or not that was enough for her to deserve this decision is open to interpretation, but she's clearly getting better. The biggest positive for Dern in this fight is that she nearly submitted Torres on three different occasions in Round 2. The bad news was that she was dominated in the stand-up in Round 3, and seemingly accomplished fairly little in the opening frame, which ended up deciding the fight. Dern remains reckless on the feet, pushing forward when opportunities aren't there. She's better in that area than she was, but she's still not great. What Dern does have going for her -- other than her world-class ground game -- is that fact she's physical and fearless. Enough questions remain surrounding Dern's all-around game that it's a stretch to call her a title contender at this point, but she could get there. Mackenzie has won five of her past six and turned just 29 years of age last month.

Drops main event in Vegas
October 9, 2021
Dern lost to Marina Rodriguez via unanimous decision (46-49, 46-49, 46-49) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
On the surface, this would appear to be a disappointing loss for Dern in a main event spot in which she entered as a significant (-195) favorite, but this is a woman with barely a dozen professional fights under her belt, and it's not as if she performed poorly here. Dern really only had one good round -- the second -- be she was so dominant in that frame that she deserved an easy 10-8 score. Dern spent nearly the entire frame in a dominating position, scoring 4:21 worth of control time in the five minute round. The vast majority of the rest of the fight -- particularly the final three rounds -- consisted of Rodriguez in control on the feet. Dern's striking has improved, but it will never be on the level of her grappling, and this type of thing is at risk of happening when ever she goes against an opponent who excels in the stand-up. That said, Dern is unquestionably improving, and her ceiling remains among the highest among all female's on the UFC roster. It's not much consolation, but she'll also walk away with a $50,000 bonus after this bout was awarded Fight of the Night honors.
Set for October return
July 10, 2021
Dern (thumb) will headline an October event with a fight against Marina Rodriguez, according to a report from Brett Okamoto of
It's worth noting that contracts have not been signed between both parties, but the 115-pound contest is close to being finalized and should be formally announced sooner than later. This fight will represent Dern's return to action and she went 3-0 in 2020 while posting an 11-1 record overall. Dern has been medically suspended for six months by the Nevada Athletic Commission following her bout against Nina Nunes on April, but she should be ready to feature in this one.
Given six-month medical suspension
April 13, 2021
Dern has been medically suspended for six months by the Nevada Athletic Commission following Saturday's UFC on ABC 2 bout versus Nina Nunes due to a positive result on an X-ray of her right thumb, Alexander K. Lee of reports.
Dern didn't take long to pick up the win over Nunes in Saturday's bout, forcing her to tap late in the first round via armbar. Unfortunately, she didn't escape unscathed and will now have to gain clearance from a doctor to retake the Octagon before Oct. 8.
