Moldavsky defeated Timothy Johnson via unanimous decision (49-46, 50-45, 49-46) to pick up the interim heavyweight championship at Bellator 261 on Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut.
ANALYSIS
With former heavyweight champion Ryan Bader not seeing action in the division since September of 2019, Bellator brass decided it was time to crown an interim champion. With MMA legend Fedor Emalianenko in his corner, Moldavsky ended up taking four of five rounds and will now take up the mantle. His only real adversity came in Round 2, as Johnson landed several big shots, but Moldavsky weathered the storm. He also benefitted from an inadvertent clash of heads in Round 4 that left Johnson cut above the eye. The younger Moldavsky was just the more complete martial artist here, mixing in his wrestling and patient striking to outlast the veteran and cash the ticket as a (-270) betting favorite. A date with Bader shouldn't be too far off in the future.
