2022 Tournament PreviewThe Broncos won the Mountain West regular season and tournament, and are dancing with six Quad 1 wins and only one bad Quad 4 loss. Their success is based on stout defense, as they rank 17th in defensive efficiency, per KenPom, and clean up on the glass with the fifth-ranked defensive rebounding rate in the nation led by 6-10 senior center Mladen Armus (7.2 ppg, 7.9 rpg). Abu Kigab (14.7 ppg, 5.8 rpg) had a breakout campaign that included first-team all-Mountain West defensive honors, and the return of former Arizona wing Emmanuel Akot (10.7 ppg, 3.2 rpg) from a mid-season knee injury also helps the case. Outside shooting is tougher for the Broncos, but senior point guard Marcus Shaver (13.6 ppg, 3.8 rpg) has knocked down 57 treys on 36.1 percent long-distance shooting. Conference Freshman of the Year Tyson Degenhart (9.9 ppg) shoots 41.7 percent from downtown and since entering the starting five in mid-November has averaged 11.6 points and 4.5 rebounds. Simply put, there are a lot of ways this team can win.
