Newman made his first Jayhawk start and produced 12 points (4-14 FG, 2-6 3Pt, 2-2 FT) and nine boards in the win over Kentucky in the Champions Classic on Tuesday. He added three steals and two assists.

The Jayhawks only hit 35.3 percent of their field goals, so Newman's shooting issues were not an exception against the Wildcat defense. The Mississippi State transfer supplanted Marcus Garrett after coming off the bench in the opener and should start for the rest of the season.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Newman came off the bench and provided 12 points (5-8 FG, 2-4 3Pt), four rebounds, two assists, and a block in a blowout of Tennessee State on Friday.

Head coach Bill Self sent a message to Newman by taking away his starting role for this contest after a lousy week of practice. Marcus Garrett started in his place and had 10 points and 10 rebounds. While Garrett was solid, it would still be a surprise to see him get another start in Newman's place in a big showcase game next Tuesday against Kentucky.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Newman had a team-high 17 points to go along with four assists and three rebounds in Tuesday's exhibition victory over Mississippi State, the Kansas City Star reports.

Newman, who was voted the Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year, is poised to take on a prime scoring role with the Jayhawks this season. A transfer from Mississippi State, Newman spent all of last season on the bench due to NCAA transfer rules, but was still able to practice with the team. That time should come in handy in 2017-18, when Newman is expected to start in the backcourt alongside Devonte Graham.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Newman was named the 2017-18 Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year, per Thursday's release.

Newman was one of the most highly-touted recruits in the 2015 class, but failed to make an impact at Mississippi State. The 6-3 shooting guard averaged 11.3 points on 39.1 percent shooting, but was limited by a back injury and eventually removed from the starting lineup. A change of scenery and a few years to mature and develop his game could be just what the doctor ordered for Newman, as he'll head to a blue blood program where he's projected to get the immediate starting nod. As a score-first combo guard, Newman should make an immediate splash in fantasy circles. A backcourt composed of Newman and Preseason Player of the Year Devonte Graham could be the best in the conference, if not the country.

Newman will transfer to Kansas, the Clarion Ledger reports. He will sit out the 2016-17 season and have three years of eligibility remaining.

The highly touted guard struggled with his shot as a freshman for the Rebels. He averaged 11.3 points, but made just 39.1 percent of his field goals. Newman did convert 37.9 percent from long range. After he sits out one season, coach Bill Self should find many uses for the athletic 6-3 Mississippi native.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Newman has asked for his release from Mississippi State and intends to transfer, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports.

This doesn't come as a surprise as Newman has been opting for a transfer for about a week now after receiving an unfavorable second-round draft grade. He will most likely be released by Mississippi State and be eligible to transfer, despite having to sit out a year due to NCAA transfer rules. As of this time, there is no indication where Newman might transfer to.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Newman will withdraw his name from consideration for the 2016 NBA Draft, but may explore options other than returning to Mississippi State, Jeff Goodman of ESPN reports.

The other opportunities remain a bit unclear, but would likely involve either playing overseas or transferring to another school. Newman was reportedly uncomfortable with his second-round draft grade and has decided to forgo the draft in an attempt to bolster his draft stock. More on his situation could come out in the future, but he can safely be taken off NBA draft boards at a minimum.

Newman (back) had eight points (3-6 FG, 2-4 3Pt), two rebounds and an assist over 18 minutes off the bench in Wednesday's loss to Texas A&M.

Newman had been a game-time call for the contest after dealing with knee and back issues over the past few weeks, and although he suited up, I.J. Ready was ultimately given another start in his favor. It remains unclear if this will be the plan moving forward while Newman recovers from his various injuries.
