Rest-of-Season Projections
2022 Fantasy Outlook
Guerra entered 2021 with low expectations after logging just eight combined big-league innings during the previous two campaigns. To the surprise of many, he became one of Oakland's most trusted relievers as the season progressed. The 32-year-old ended the year with a decent 4.11 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 62:20 K:BB across a career-high 53 appearances (65.2 innings), and those numbers would have been much better had it not been for a rough final month. Utilizing a five-pitch mix, Guerra dominated with his sinker, curveball and newly-developed cutter, as hitters went a combined 5-for-56 against the three offerings. With the Athletics' relief corps having plenty of moving parts entering 2022, Guerra appears to be one of the few arms with a firm grasp on a bullpen spot. Lou Trivino is the frontrunner to open the campaign as the team's closer, but Guerra poses a strong case to see high-leverage work right out of the gate. Read Past Outlooks

Undergoes Tommy John surgery
Guerra underwent reconstructive surgery on the UCL in his right elbow Wednesday, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The A's announced Guerra's elbow procedure last week, but it wasn't previously specified as Tommy John surgery. The 32-year-old will miss the rest of the season and likely the first half of the 2023 campaign while going through his recovery and rehab.

Guerra was designated for assignment for the second time following the 2015 season, but the Angels opted to take a chance on him with a Rule 5 draft pick. Although he didn't stick with the club in that capacity, he did manage to make his mark at the major league level. On the heels of just three strong appearances with Triple-A Salt Lake, the big reliever carved out a major role in the Angels bullpen thanks to his impressive control (1.2 BB/9). Although his 6.1 K/9 wasn't anywhere near as good as it was in the minors, the right-hander managed to get batters out without the whiffs to finish the season with a quality 3.21 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. Guerra appeared to be poised to enter 2017 as a middle reliever for the Angels prior to being designated for assignment in February, but his inability to miss bats should preclude him from climbing back to the majors very soon.
