2022 Fantasy Outlook
While the 34-year-old Patton notched his two career saves in 2021, he could be a bigger factor for saves in the Rangers' bullpen this year. Joe Barlow was the Rangers' closer last year, but the team has signaled that it wants to use him in more of a fireman role in 2022. That leaves Patton, Greg Holland and Matt Bush as options for traditional ninth-inning usage. Holland may be the most obvious candidate, given his experience as a closer, but Patton saved 45 games in the minors and had a 3.06 xERA and 19.2 K-BB% last season. Read Past Outlooks

Activated, sent to Triple-A
Patton (oblique) was activated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday and subsequently optioned to Triple-A Round Rock.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander has been sidelined by a strained right oblique since April 24, but he's now healthy after a one-game rehab assignment. Patton allowed three earned runs with a 5:3 K:BB over seven innings to begin the season, so he could receive another opportunity in the big-league bullpen later in the year.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2015
The Cubs shuttled Patton between Chicago and Triple-A Iowa last season, largely due to his struggles with walks (5.9 BB/9) and home runs (1.27 HR/9) during his time with the big club. Armed with a three-pitch mix that includes a low-90s fastball, slider, and changeup, Patton whiffed batters at an excellent clip during his time with Iowa (14.8 K/9), but he failed to replicate that level of success when called upon in Chicago (9.3 K/9). In two opportunities against big league hitters, Patton has failed to emerge as more than an extra reliever. At age 29, his chances of sticking as a regular contributor for a first-division club appear to be slim.
