Loses spot on 40-man roster
PLos Angeles Angels  AAA
December 1, 2021
Selman was designated for assignment by the Angels on Wednesday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Selman appeared in 25 major-league games with the Angels and Giants during 2021 and posted a 5.76 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 19:12 K:BB in 25 innings. The move creates space on the Angels' 40-man roster for the addition of Raisel Iglesias.

Stat Review
How does Sam Selman compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.

Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2020
2015
Selman is part of a dying breed; a true LOOGY by nature. Major League Baseball is doing what it can to eliminate the Selmans from the game with the three-batter-minimum rule. The Giants did a good job working around it in 2020, giving Selman the ball 24 times but limiting him to 19.1 innings. Selman has not been disastrous against right-handed hitters by any means, but they hit 150 points better than lefties did against Selman in 2020 and also walked 12.8% of the time against him. San Francisco will live with some exposure to righties because Selman is so tough for lefties to square up with a slider that breaks close to four inches on average away from his opponents. He had a long, slow climb through the minor leagues with the Royals before debuting with the Giants in 2019. Selman looks to be here to stay with his dominance of lefties and flyball lean being a nice fit in Oracle Park.
Selman made his major-league debut at age 28 in August and went on to throw 10.1 largely uneventful innings, posting a 4.35 ERA and a 10:5 K:BB. The lefty's repertoire doesn't seem to make him stand out from the large group of relievers with minimal big-league resumes, as his fastball averaged just 89.9 mph while his slider (his only secondary) came in at 79.9 mph. While those pitches didn't have noteworthy results in the majors, his Triple-A numbers told an entirely different story. In 48.0 innings for Sacramento, he posted a 2.06 ERA with an excellent 43.8% strikeout rate. On the one hand, it's rarely worth getting excited about a 28-year-old's minor-league numbers; on the other, it's hard to ignore a strikeout rate that high. If Selman can recapture some of that form in the majors, he could move towards a high-leverage role, but his complete lack of track record means there's little sense investing now.
Selman began his 2014 season with Double-A Northwest Arkansas on a quest to improve the control issues that plagued him in 2013, when led the Class A Carolina League with 85 free passes. The southpaw was relatively successful in this endeavor, dropping his BB/9 from 6.1 to 4.7, though he still has plenty of work to do. Inconsistencies in Selman's delivery from his 6-foot-3 frame have been partially to blame, but if he can correct those control problems, he may be able to get to the big leagues in his age-24 season. He finished 2014 at Triple-A Omaha, where he'll likely begin the 2015 campaign, and if Selman does get the call, look for him to serve as an emergency back-end rotation option or in middle relief. He was actually far more successful in relief at the Double-A level, posting a 1.62 ERA in 16.2 innings, as opposed to a 4.36 mark in 76.1 innings as a starter.
