Arizona Diamondbacks
Team: Arizona Diamondbacks
Total Saves: 17
(6/21) The Diamondbacks signed Mark Melancon and Ian Kennedy this offseason to try to provide stability in the late innings. Melancon led the majors with 39 saves last year and is among the active leaders in career saves. However, both veterans are struggling in 2022, so keep an eye on Joe Mantiply for ancillary saves, as he's been one of the league's best reliever through late-June.

Atlanta Braves

Total Saves: 26
Closer: Kenley Jansen 15-Day IL
Next in Line: Will Smith , A.J. Minter
(6/28) Kenley Jansen was placed on the 15-day IL with an irregular heartbeat, thus leaving Will Smith and possibly A.J. Minter to fill in for saves in his absence. Smith led all relievers with a 92.5% team save share last season, while Minter is among the league Holds leaders through late-June. Jackson Stephens has also logged a couple three-inning saves this season.

  1. 6/29:A.J. Minter, who logged his first save of the season Tuesday at Philadelphia, has appeared in 3 games in 4 days. This makes Will Smith the likeliest candidate for a save chance if one were to arise Wednesday.
Baltimore Orioles
Team: Baltimore Orioles
Total Saves: 19
Closer: Jorge Lopez
(6/21) After Baltimore relievers finished with a league-worst ERA last season, the 2022 bullpen is a surprising strength for manager Brandon Hyde. This unit ranks top 10 in the league by ERA through early June, with Jorge Lopez emerging early on as the team's primary closer. Felix Bautista, Cionel Perez and Dillon Tate are the top options behind him for ancillary save support, with Bautista offering the most upside out of the three due to his ability to hit 100 mph on the radar gun.

Boston Red Sox
Team: Boston Red Sox
Total Saves: 17
Closer: Committee
(6/27) Tanner Houck was placed on the Restricted list ahead of Boston's three-game series at Toronto. In his absence, John Schreiber and Matt Strahm are the likelist candidates to fill in for save opportunities. While the team is in Canada, Houck will throw a live batting practice session in Boston to stay sharp before he's eligible to rejoin the Red Sox in Chicago for their series with the Cubs that begins Friday. Houck has emerged as Boston's preferred option at closer over the past three weeks, so look for him to reclaim the closer role this weekend. Hansel Robles and Matt Barnes (when healthy) are potential options to rejoin the mix for saves later this season with improved performance.

Team Notes
  1. 6/27:Tanner Houck was placed on the restricted list Monday prior to Boston's three-game series at Toronto. Matt Strahm and John Schreiber are the likeliest candidates for save opportunities should any arise during the series.
  2. 10/11:Hansel Robles exited Game 3 of the ALDS on Sunday due to a stomach illness after allowing two runs in two-thirds of an inning. He should be considered day-to-day due to his illness. Assuming he tests negative for COVID-19, it wouldn't be surprising to see the right-hander available for Game 4 on Monday. It was the first earned run he's allowed since August 29.
  3. 10/5:Entering tonight's AL Wild Card game against the Yankees, Hansel Robles has not allowed an earned run in 15 consecutive outings. Both he and Adam Ottavino enter tonight's contest with two-days rest, while Garrett Richards and Garrett Whitlock have had one day of rest after both pitched on Sunday.
Chicago Cubs
Team: Chicago Cubs
Total Saves: 16
(6/21) Veteran David Robertson has been the Cubs primary closer through the first three months of 2022, with Rowan Wick stepping in for ninth inning duties when Robertson was on the COVID IL. Keep in mind Robertson is on a one-year deal and is a likely trade candidate this summer if the Cubs continue to fall out of playoff contention. Manager David Ross turned to a closer committee last season after the Cubs traded their veteran relievers, with 12 relievers in all recording a save. Wick might be the biggest benefactor later this season if Robertson is indeed traded. Until then, expect Robertson to continue in the closer role to build up his trade value.

Cincinnati Reds
Team: Cincinnati Reds
Total Saves: 15
Closer: Committee
Next in Line: Hunter Strickland , Tony Santillan 15-Day IL, Alexis Diaz 15-Day IL
(6/29) Reds manager David Bell likes fluid bullpen roles, as 6 different relievers have combined for 15 saves this season, with Hunter Strickland and Tony Santillan leading the team with 4 apiece. Strickland has earned 3 out of the last 4 saves for the Reds, as the bullpen has been plagued by injuries with Santillan, 2022 breakout reliever Alexis Diaz and Lucas Sims currently on the IL. With all the current injuries, it appears Strickland will get some extended run as the Reds closer, with Luis Cessa and Joel Kuhnel as the next best options. Meanwhile, Art Warren and Dauri Moreta had a lot of hype coming into the season, but have underperformed. This is likely to be a closer committee all season, even when Santillan, Diaz and Sims return from injury.

Cleveland Guardians
Team: Cleveland Guardians
Total Saves: 20
(6/21) After a slow start to the season, at least in terms of saves, Emmanuel Clase is having a phenomenal month of June. He's now among the league save leaders, with 2022 breakout reliever Eli Morgan setting him up in high leverage. Clase's job security is extremely high and a team save share over 80% is expected. One concern with this relief corps coming into the season was the lack of depth behind Clase, but Enyel De Los Santos, Sam Hentges, Trevor Stephan and veteran Bryan Shaw have all logged important innings for Cleveland and the team is among the league leaders in bullpen ERA.

Colorado Rockies
Team: Colorado Rockies
Total Saves: 20
Closer: Daniel Bard
(6/21) Rockies manager Bud Black typically sticks with one primary closer and Daniel Bard has been his preferred option for ninth inning duties through late June. Alex Colome offers 155 career saves and a 50-plus percent groundball rate should Bard falter, while Carlos Estevez has some closing experience should the veterans be unavailable. Jake Bird was recently called up from the minors and struck out nearly 12 batters per nine innings in Triple-A.

Closer: Liam Hendriks 15-Day IL
(6/28) Liam Hendriks (forearm) threw a bullpen session on Monday prior to Chicago's series opener in Anaheim. Manager Tony La Russa would not commit to Hendriks needing a Triple-A rehab assignment before returning, but it sounds like he's on track for activation sometime in early July. Meanwhile, Kendall Graveman is likely to continue to filling in for saves in Hendriks' absence, with Joe Kelly and Reynaldo Lopez filling out the late-innings for Chicago. Prior to his injury, Hendriks had corrected course on his season with an MLB-leading 10 saves in May. Hendriks' job security is not in question when healthy and several metrics within his profile remain elite.

Total Saves: 18
(6/21) Manager A.J Hinch announced shortly after the 2021 season that Gregory Soto would be his closer for 2022 and the southpaw has performed as such through early June. Soto's strikeout rate is down, but he's been able to cut his walk rate a bit this season. He leads a bullpen that is one of MLB's top unit's early through three months of the season. Should Soto falter at any point, Hinch has plenty of capable arms to turn to for saves in Michael Fulmer, Alex Lange, Will Vest and Andrew Chafin.

Houston Astros
Team: Houston Astros
Total Saves: 23
(6/21) Ryan Pressly hasn't been as sharp in 2022 and experienced a dip in velocity earlier this season due to a knee injury. Fortunately, his average fastball velocity has been better of late and more in line with last season's 95.5 mph average. He maintains a firm grip on the Astros' closer role, but Rafael Montero proved he can be a capable backup, tallying several saves when Pressly was on the IL earlier this year. Hector Neris also has experience in the closer role from his time in Philadelphia.

Team Notes
  1. 7/1:Ryan Pressly has recorded a Save in each of the past 2 days. He has yet to work 3 games in a row this season, so it's likely a save chance would go to Rafael Montero on Friday.
  2. 9/29:Ryan Pressly is currently managing a knee issue and hasn't pitched since Saturday. Kendall Graveman was placed on the paternity list Tuesday. Look for Ryne Stanek or Yimi Garcia as the favorites to pitch in potential save opportunities for the next couple days if Pressley remains unavailable.
Kansas City Royals
Team: Kansas City Royals
Total Saves: 16
Next in Line: Josh Staumont 15-Day IL, Taylor Clarke
(6/21) Josh Staumont earned the Royals first few saves of 2022, but Scott Barlow has emerged as the primary closer again after leading this committee with 16 saves last season. Barlow has been excellent all year, but manager Mike Matheny has used fluid bullpen roles in the past, with eight different relievers combining for 37 saves last season. Amir Garrett has past experience in the closer role, while Dylan Coleman has high strikeout upside and may be Kansas City's closer of the future.

Total Saves: 20
(6/21) Craig Kimbrel is still converting saves and striking batters out at a high clip, but hasn't been as sharp in 2022 as the Dodgers would like him to be. Since mid-May he has an ERA over 7.00 and has suffered three losses while his walk rate has ballooned over 10 percent. His security as the Dodgers closer remains, but manager Dave Roberts can easily turn to Daniel Hudson for saves if Kimbrel's struggles persist. Alex Vesia and Brusdar Graterol will also back up Kimbrel for ancillary save support while Los Angeles awaits the return of fireman Blake Treinen (shoulder), who isn't expected back until after the All-Star break.

  2. 10/6:The Dodgers' highest-leverage relievers are well rested, as Jansen, Treinen and Vesia enter Wednesday's NL Wild Card game against the Cardinals on 4 days rest.
Miami Marlins
Team: Miami Marlins
Total Saves: 17
(6/24) Tanner Scott has gained some momentum as the Marlins closer in June, earning Miami's last six saves. With 2021 primary closer Dylan Floro unavailable for the start of the season, Anthony Bender stepped into the role early on with mixed results. Floro hasn't performed well enough this season to be in the mix for ninth inning duties and has settled into middle relief. Anthony Bass is off to a nice start in 2022, while Cole Sulser has experience closing games despite some recent meltdowns and a lat strain that required a trip to the IL. Only three Marlins pitchers combined for 33 saves last season, as manager Don Mattingly kept his closer role pretty tight. He certainly has plenty of options for saves this season and it will be interesting to see how he manages this situation moving forward.

Milwaukee Brewers

(6/21) Josh Hader is once again in elite form to open 2022. He stifled opposing hitters for over two months before finally permitting his first runs of the season on June 7. He also carried several impressive streaks along the way of consecutive saves converted and scoreless appearances and innings. Devin Williams remains one of the top closers-in-waiting after recording the first three saves of his career last year, while veteran Brad Boxberger is worth monitoring for ancillary save support.

Minnesota Twins
Team: Minnesota Twins
Total Saves: 18
Closer: Jhoan Duran
(7/1) After Emilio Pagan's recent struggles, he's been moved to low-leverage spots to get him back on track. Jhoan Duran leads the closer committee, but it's not clear who else will get save chances.

(6/21) Acquired in the Taylor Rogers trade with San Diego, Emilio Pagan currently leads manager Rocco Baldelli's closer committee. However, Pagan's perennially high home run rate and career-worst walk rate in 2022 does not inspire much confidence, thus the risk for a potential blow up is always high. Meanwhile, rookie Jhoan Duran has been electric and has already tallied a few saves through late-June. Duran could become one of the best closers in baseball if he takes over as Minnesota's primary ninth inning option. Griffin Jax is having a great month of June and could enter the mix for saves if he continues performing well with more high leverage opportunities.

(6/29) Aroldis Chapman made his third minor-league rehab appearance on Tuesday and is likely to be activated on Friday. Since he has been on the IL, Clay Holmes has done a fantastic job as the Yankees interim closer. In fact, he's done so well that he should remain in the mix for saves even when Chapman returns. The last time Chapman wasn't a primary closer was back in 2011 while with Cincinnati. He endured a rough patch over an extended period last season and still rebounded to finish the year strong. That gives me confidence he can turn his 2022 season around and reclaim a favorable share of closing duties upon his return, with Holmes still pitching in for ancillary saves, similar to Chad Green and Jonathan Loaisiga last year. Meanwhile, Michael King has stepped up for New York in a long relief role, while Loaisiga (shoulder) will look to rebound upon his return from the IL later this season.

  1. 7/1:Aroldis Chapman was activated from the 15-day IL. Clay Holmes has worked 3 games in the last 5 days, but did not pitch yesterday. Don't be surprised if the Yankees elect to give Holmes another day of rest with Chapman back. It's possible Chapman gets the call tonight if a save opportunity were to arise.
  2. 6/29:Aroldis Chapman is likely to return Friday.
  3. 10/5:Entering tonight's AL Wild Card game, Aroldis Chapman has a career 6.43 ERA and 2.07 WHIP in 14 innings at Fenway Park. However, he logged a 2.70 ERA against Boston this season with a 8:4 K:BB in 6.2 innings, albeit with two home runs allowed.
  4. 9/29:Jonathan Loaisiga (shoulder) will likely be activated Wednesday.
Oakland Athletics
Team: Oakland Athletics
Total Saves: 17
Closer: Lou Trivino
Next in Line: A.J. Puk , Dany Jimenez 15-Day IL
(7/1) Mark Kotsay's intent as the A's new manager entering 2022 was to lean on veteran Lou Trivino for saves in this otherwise inexperienced bullpen, however, Dany Jimenez emerged as the team's primary option with Trivino struggling earlier this season. Despite his struggles, Trivino has a career-best 13.9 K/9 through June thanks to a new slider he implemented this season. With Jimenez on the IL, Trivino has since reclaimed the closer role for Oakland. A.J. Puk, Domingo Acevedo and Zack Jackson are also worth monitoring for saves, especially so later on this season if Oakland elects to trade Trivino and/or Jimenez. Puk, in particular, is pitching well overall this season, but appears stuck in a middle relief role and blew a recent save chance after throwing two wild pitches.

(6/26) Interim manager Rob Thomson has decided to move Corey Knebel out of the closer role for now, thus moving to a closer committee that has included Brad Hand, Seranthony Dominguez and Andrew Bellatti thus far. After spending the first two months of the season as the Phillies primary closer, Knebel forced the switch to a committee based on his recent performances. Dominguez has been Philadelphia's best reliever this season and saved 16 games as a rookie in 2018. He's likely to get some save chances, but the first two opportunities went to Hand, though he blew one of them, while the most recent save went to Bellatti. (6/21) For a team in rebuilding mode, the Pirates have a clear-cut closer situation, as manager Derek Shelton is deploying his best reliever - David Bednar - as his primary closer in 2022. Veteran Chris Stratton and long-man Wil Crowe have mixed in for saves on occasion, but Bednar's dominant performance thus far makes him the best option moving forward. (6/21) San Diego closers have been very effective in recent years with both Mark Melancon (39 saves in 2021) and Kirby Yates (41 saves in 2019) leading the league in saves. With Melancon departing for Arizona, and new manager Bob Melvin replacing Jayce Tingler, the closer role was unsettled all spring until the Padres acquired Taylor Rogers from Minnesota on Opening Day. Melvin quickly named him the closer and Rogers has responded to the role well in 2022 while ranking among the league's save leaders. (6/21) Camilo Doval, Jake McGee and Tyler Rogers are back for 2022, with Doval earning the lion's share of save opportunities through the first three months of the season. McGee missed some time recently with lower back tightness, but his fastball velocity is up since returning. 3. 9/30:Doval earned his 2nd big-league save on Wednesday and may be the new closer in San Francisco.
  4. 9/29:The plans for Jake McGee (oblique) beyond Wednesday aren't entirely clear, but so long as he gets through mound work without any setbacks, a return to the Giants' bullpen for the final regular-season series against the Padres might not be out of the question.

(6/21) Manager Oliver Marmol didn't name a closer going into 2022, but Giovanny Gallegos served as the Cardinals' primary option for saves for the first month and a half of this season. In late-May, Ryan Helsley emerged as Marmol's 1A to Gallegos' 1B and recent usage has reflected Helsley as the preferred stopper in the ninth inning. Both pitchers have proved they are more than capable of handling closer duties, so don't be surprised if this role fluctuates throughout the rest of the season. Tampa Bay Rays

Total Saves: 21
Closer: Committee
Next in Line: Colin Poche , Jason Adam , J.P. Feyereisen 15-Day IL
(6/21) Colin Poche has taken over as the Tampa Bay closer committee leader in the absence of Andrew Kittredge (elbow), who will undergo Tommy John surgery. Also mixing in for late-inning high leverage work will be Jason Adam, J.P. Feyereisen (when healthy), Ryan Thompson, Matt Wisler and Brooks Raley. Pete Fairbanks and Nick Anderson may become contributors after the All-Star break, but both are on the 60-day IL. Tampa Bay led the league with 14 pitchers with saves last season. It was the third consecutive year they've used 10-plus pitchers for saves. We've come to expect varied late-inning usage from manager Kevin Cash and 2022 has been no different. Josh Fleming, JT Chargois, Pete Fairbanks, J.P.
