| Recent Blog Post: Long Game Extra: Live-tweeting the Auction |
| My home AL-only keeper league auction is today (12 teams, 5x5, pretty standard roto ultra rules with the addition of an in-season salary cap), and I figured I might as well live-tweet the thing. Why? For reasons!
If you want to follow along, my Twitter handle is @AntonSirius. I'm starting it out with $173 (only three teams have more, with the big stack carrying $208), and the following roster:
C: Salvador Perez $3B, Tyler Flowers $3C
1B: Eric Hosmer $17Y
SS: Eduardo Nunez $6C
CI: Chris Carter $8B
OF: David Murphy $4B, Jonny Gomes $1B
P: Yu Darvish $31B, Matt Moore $10B, Brett Anderson $2B, Felix Doubront $2B
Minors: Bubba Starling, Michael Choice, Jonathan Schoop
(Note: for long-term contracts we bump the letter designation to the end of the alphabet so that they expire at the end of their 'Z' season.)
As you can see, I'm set at catcher and don't have to worry about scarcity there, but I've got no closers so I'll have to pay full retail for a couple. Third base is also an issue, as there are only three good ones (Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Beltre and Evan Longoria) available. All the young middle-tier guys are protected, so the drop-off in talent after the big three is STEEP. If I don't land one of them, I could be looking at a Matt Dominguez as the fallback. That's scary.
Nunez was the only really difficult choice, but with Jeter out for a bit, the other injury issues the Yankees have and me lacking steals, $6 didn't seem like much of an overpay and I could easily see him going for more at auction. The alternative would have been something like Eric Sogard at $1, and that seemed like a much bigger risk.

Recommendation |
Mark Appel (P) HOU |
6/19/2013 |
| Appel has agreed to a deal with the Astros, the Houston Chronicle's Brian T. Smith reports. |
The No. 1 overall selection comes with a $7.79 million slot allotment, but details of the deal are not publicly available at the moment. Appel is a polished prospect after a four-year career at Stanford, and will thus be expected to progress through the organization at a rapid pace. Those of you in dynasty leagues will just want to remember that the Astros don't have any delusions about competing before 2015 or 2016. Appel's arbitration status will likely be managed closely until the Astros have a respectable team. |

Trevor Crowe (OF) HOU |
6/19/2013 |
| Crowe has been relegated to the bench since the return of Justin Maxwell from the disabled list, according to the Houston Chronicle. |
Crowe lost his starting spot just a day after manager Bo Porter said the 29-year-old had taken over in right field for Jimmy Paredes, who was optioned to Triple-A. Porter has praised Crowe’s on-the-field effort and off-the-field energy, but it's hard to be comfortable with an outfielder hitting .182 with a .528 OPS. |
|
Carlos Pena (1B) HOU |
6/18/2013 |
| Pena went 1-for-3 with a three-run homer in Tuesday's win over Milwaukee. |
Despite the mini-outburst, Pena is having a tough month of June (.146/.281/.376) and the RBI are his first since June 5. |
|
Jordan Lyles (P) HOU |
6/18/2013 |
| Lyles was dominant for the second consecutive start Tuesday, allowing just one earned run on seven hits in the win over Milwaukee. |
While the Astros have struggled, Lyles is quietly having an excellent season. He sports a 3.22 ERA and has allowed more than two earned runs just twice in 10 starts. |
|
Justin Maxwell (OF) HOU |
6/18/2013 |
| Maxwell is in the Astros' lineup Tuesday against the Brewers, as he is covering right field and batting seventh in the order. |
Maxwell was activated from the disabled list Tuesday, after residing there since April 23 due to a fractured hand. While his rehab assignment at Double-A Corpus Christi got off to a slow start, he finished with four hits, including a long ball, in 18 at-bats at Triple-A Oklahoma City. Now that he's back in Houston, Maxwell may not start much in his typical spot in center field, as Brandon Barnes is holding down the fort at the position. |

Justin Maxwell (OF) HOU |
6/18/2013 |
| Maxwell (hand) was activated from the disabled list Tuesday, CSN Houston reports. |
Maxwell broke his hand on April 23 and has been recovering in the meantime. Since starting a rehab assignment on June 4, he hasn't been too proficient at the plate, with just five hits in 39 at-bats at Double-A Corpus Christi and Triple-A Oklahoma City. However, he did slash .222/.286/.389 at the latter, while displaying some power with one homer in 18 at-bats. It is unclear whether he'll play center field Tuesday, as Brandon Barnes has taken over the everyday gig in his absence. |
|
Brandon Barnes (OF) HOU |
6/17/2013 |
| Barnes went 3-for-5 with a run and two stolen bases in Monday's 4-2 loss to the White Sox. |
Barnes is still just 6-for-11 on stolen base attempts this year, but fantasy owners will be glad to see that a lack of success hasn't kept him from trying. So long as he keeps producing, Barnes figures to hold on to the starting center field job after Justin Maxwell (hand) returns from the disabled list. Maxwell would likely slide over to left field, leaving the struggling J.D. Martinez in danger of losing his starting job. |
|
Justin Maxwell (OF) HOU |
6/17/2013 |
| Maxwell (hand) will be activated from the DL and start Tuesday against the Brewers, the Houston Chronicle reports. |
Close to two month after suffering a broken left hand, Maxwell is ready to return to the big club. Manager Bo Porter said Maxwell will start Tuesday, but the 29-year-old did hit just .128 during his 11-game rehab stint and he may not see everyday time in center upon his return. |
